about

This lyric contains the story of my Mother’s conversion back in 1949. Logan, West Virginia is the featured town in the title but the story takes place in a little known community the locals called Godby Branch. I’m profoundly grateful for my Mother’s decision to respond to Christ. It made an impact on my Dad, my sister, Jeannie, on me and on generations to come.

lyrics

Down To Logan

From the last house in the hollow
Up on Godby Branch
She walked out the dirt road
On her way to take a chance
That night school down in Logan
Seemed like the only way
They needed more to feed a family
Than just a taxi driver’s pay

Her young husband kept the baby
She’d be back at ten
But it was quarter past eleven
She came walking in
He said How’d were things at class tonight
She said I don’t know
Before I made it to the bus stop
Jesus saved my soul

I heard singing coming from the church on the hill
Sweetest sound I ever heard breaking down my will
I could feel it, the Spirit, calling out to me
Now I believe …and that’s why
I didn’t make it to down to Logan tonight
(She didn’t make it down to Logan that night)

He said, “You would have been a good nurse
But did you change your mind
You know we really need the money
To get us (help us make it) through these times
And girl it sure sounds crazy
To hear you say you’re born again
She said, “If you’ll just go there with me
I know you’ll understand

Cho…

It was only two nights later he went with her down that road
And when my mama tells the story the part I like the most

I heard singing coming from the church on the hill
Sweetest sound I ever heard breaking down my will
I could feel it, the Spirit, calling out to me
Now I believe …and that’s why
I didn’t make it to down to Logan that night
Now I believe…that’s why
She didn’t make it down to Logan that night
