Seven Soldiers
The congregation stood twenty-seven strong
And in the eyes of God they were doing nothing wrong
They were lifting up their hearts to Him who died on a tree
Praising God because He lives to set their spirits free
Then suddenly some soldiers came breaking through the door
The sounds of boots and metal sent them kneeling to the floor
And a soldier with a voice so strong that it rumbled in their souls
Said, “Those who will deny your God, this is your chance to go.”
And there were four who didn’t hesitate
They quickly ran outside
Two bowed their heads in shame and they walked away and cried
And one as he was leaving went screaming as he said,
“How can you serve your God if all of you are dead?”
Well the rest of them in silence lay waiting for the pain
And with their eyes they told each other,
“We will not deny His name”
Then one of the seven comrades firmly closed and locked the door
Then one by one the soldiers lay their weapons on the floor
Then the leader with the voice so strong
Began to speak through tears
My brethren we are sorry that we brought to you such fear
But we could take no chances with those who left tonight
For we are seven soldiers who love the name of Christ!
And in the safety of the hour
With an angel by the door
The saints and the soldiers
Lifted praises to the Lord
And now I face this question
What would I have done
Had I been among the number
Who were tested by the gun?
The congregation stood, still twenty-seven strong
And in the eyes of God they were doing nothing wrong
