They Never Dreamed

He passed away sometime ago, washed her dreams away in tears
She thought she'd be a widow for the rest of her years
But then one day her sister called, "Could you come here Tuesday night?
There'll be four of us in all, we think he's someone you might like."

She'd been through that scheme before, another evening on display
She'd go along just once more, it wasn't easy at her age
But right away she realized he was not like all the rest
He brought a smile back to her eyes, she wondered if she passed the test

She never dreamed she'd dream that way again
When the evening was over all she thought about was him
And how they came so quickly to feel like lifetime friends
She never dreamed she'd dream that way again

She didn't know the thoughts he had when he went back to his room
It'd been a while since he felt like that and he wondered if she knew
He shared the pain that she had known when Heaven called his love away
He placed her number by his phone and rehearsed what he would say

He never dreamed he'd dream that way again
When the evening was over all he thought about was them
And how they came so quickly to feel like lifetime friends
He never dreamed he'd dream that way again

She never dreamed she'd dream that way
He never dreamed he'd dream that way
They never dreamed they'd dream that way again
